Hear God’s Voice (May 25, 2013)

  1. Intro
  2. The Need to Hear – Why?
  3. Hindrances to Hearing – How to overcome them?

  • “let me pray about it” is often used as a holy excuse.
  • old testament “Dost sayeth the Lord”

  1. Is God still speaking today?
    • Many Christians appear to have settled their relationship with Christ for a DUMB God!
    • If the devil can speak ofcourse God can speak.
  2. Is it possible to hear the voice of God
  3. how do we hear the voice of God?
    1. we need to acquire the skill
    2. distinguish between the world's noise and God's voice.
      • know the word of God
      • commit yourself to prayer. Be on your knees all the time.
    • through the word of God
    • through other people
    • gift of discernment
    • through the Holy Spirit
  4. What does the Bible Say?
    • See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? Heb 12:25
    • “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” For 7 times He said in Rev Chapter 1 to Chapter 3.

The Need to Hear

  1. Matt 4:4 - Proceeds = Present-continuous tense
  2. 2 Cor 6:16 - God wants to dwell amongst us.

God still dwells amongst us and He continues to speak to us to help us live a victorious life on earth.

Questions that Church Pastor & Leaders face

  1. What does God expect me to do?
    • If I know what I am supposed to do, God will get it done.
  2. What am I to leave up to God to do?
  3. Where does my responsibility end and God begin?

Luke 12:47-48 - 47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

  • Servant = Leader
  • God holds His servant responsible to know His will and to take action (to do) the will of God.
  • The will of God also establishes the limits of our responsibility.
  • To do the will of God, we must know His will. To know His will, we must hear His voice.

Hindrances to Hearing God's Voice (June 1, 2013)

  • People in the Bible times understood the HEART to be the seat of (a) emotion or affection, (b) motives and © intentions of the person (2 Chr 16:9)

1. Heart Not Perfect Before God

  1. Worldly Affection - That offends God (1 Jn 2:15; Matt 22:37)
  2. Impure motives - God will judge us like Balaam (Num 23)
  3. Wrong intentions - God despises it. Like Ananias & Sapphira (Acts 5). God knows our heart.
    • read 1 Sam 16:7 - if we do not keep our hearts right in his sight, we will not hear God's voice.

2. Hardness of Heart (Heb 4:7)

  1. Un-forgiveness Stops God's voice. Ask for examples.
  2. Forgiveness Brings a return of God's Voice. Ask for examples.
    • confession of unforgiveness, being honest with God
    • debate with God and sharing with God how you feel (the pain)
    • praying and asking God to help us to forgive
  • God wants us to forgive
    • ignoring that, is ignoring God (God's voice).
    • forgiveness is a choice you have to make
    • Grace
  • How do we know we have forgiven someone?
    • sometimes when we see people it is still jarring or hurt. Doesn't mean we haven't forgiven. Just need healing.
    • what is our attitude towards the person? Do we have ill intent for that person. Can we pray blessing for that person?

3. An Unregenerate Condition

  1. John Wesley was asked by the Moravian believers shortly after his mission trip to USA: Are you born again of the Spirit of God? (it was an offensive question). In short, he repented and God used him as founder of one of the greatest revival moment in church history - Methodist. Wesley encountered (1) Rom 8:16 (2) 1 John 5:10

Saving faith or Intellectual agreement

  • Wesley saw the differences between saving faith and intellectual agreement after being continuously being asked by the Moravians. He spent the remaining years showing people and priests how essential it is to know that you are born again.
  • must have balance of biblical knowledge and experience of holy spirit. Like a dove with two wings, if it is unbalanced, you will fly around in circles. To soar you must have both.

You can know you are save and able to explain it

  • When Jesus comes into your heart, he cleanses it and sweep it free from sin & darkness, and takes away the hard heart & give you a soft and tender heart of flesh so that you can hear His voice. (Read Rom 10:9-10; John 10:27; Eze 36:25-27)

4. Disobedience Stops God's Voice (Rom 10:17)

  • Faith = obedience action to what God says

Pride Prevent Obedience

  • Oral Robert always said, “Every time I've prepared to pray for the sick, I have had to hang my pride on the cross AGAIN - because I know that ONLY a few of those I pray for will be healed”. He crosses the barrier of shame inflicted by the critics (read Prov 29:25). If we try what God is saying and fail, what will the people think?
  • Fear of man = pride

Preconceptions Hinder Obedience

  • read 2 king 5 - Story of Naaman
  • Naaman needed to humble himself in order to receive his healing - Water in Syria was better than River Jordan.
    • he had to dunk himself 7 times. He believed the water was dirtier. His homeland water was cleaner (in his mind).
  • Our theology often comes in the conflict with the spirit's guidance in our ministry
  • Our preconceptions prevents us from hearing & obeying God's voice
    • ex) God only speaks in a specific way (audible voice).
    • ex) We always do things a specific way. God wants us to do the opposite. “That can't be God”.
    • ex) Seeing or experiencing things of God as children and expecting them to always be that way even as adults.
  • Feel threatened by a perceived competitor thus preventing resource utilizations
    • ex) Substitute teachers, guest speakers for Pastor
  • Tradition - don't change the way we have been doing or preferred lifestyle. This will keep you from doing what God says.

Closing Prayer (groups of 2-3)

Lord deliver me from my:

  1. disobedience
  2. preconceptions
  3. traditions
  4. hardness of heart

…all of which prevent me from hearing and obeying your voice.
